Neon and metal sculpture, framed drawing on construction plan, various dimensions

The neon works Castles in the Air deal with architecture and ideas of what constitutes a beautiful and representative building. Historically, such buildings were commissioned by those in power and constructed by large numbers of workers who built castles, pyramids, temples, and government buildings. The castles shown here are based on designs created by workers on construction sites, such as Berlin Modern or Humboldt Forum. Each of these castles reflects the individual fantasies and ideas of different craftspeople. From electricians to plumbers, each person has their own vision of the house they would like to live in. The colour of each neon work always corresponds to the colour of the marker chosen by the craftspeople as they sketch their dream castle on an old work document from their actual construction site. The sketch and the neon work together constitute a single artwork.
