Flock

Concept

-2002-

Flock involves the public – in this case, visitors to a preview of the exhibition Con Art: Magic/Object/Action at the Site Gallery in Sheffield, England. One after another, volunteers allow a magician, assistant of the famous David Copperfield, to turn them into sheep. The next thing you know, there’s a flock wandering through the gallery, bleating and leaving behind droppings.
Flock is the third work, following My Life as a Dove (1996) and Direktor Pudel (1998), in Jankowski’s series Magic Circle, which uses the theme of transformation to discuss disenchantment with the art world. The first involved the artist himself; the second, the director of an institution; the last, viewers.
