Bravo Jankowski

Concept

-2003-

In 1965, German singer-songwriter Horst Jankowski (1936–1998) released an LP with the title Bravo Jankowski!, a bizarre mix of self-congratulation and irony. Upon learning about the record, Christian Jankowski jumped on the bandwagon. Horst Jankowski’s easy-listening swing music serves as the background for a video that Christian Jankowski recorded with the staff of the Lisson Gallery in London, on the occasion of his first solo exhibition there. Without telling them about Horst Jankowski or the source of the video’s title, the artist asked everyone – from the gallery employees to the maintenance staff – for their opinions about his body of work. As expected, their reactions were positive: bravo Jankowski!
