At the start of this video, the entire frame is filled with a view of water. Then, Jankowski steps into the water. It ripples gently. He dives below the surface. One after another, multiple heads rise up out of the water. They take a breath, cough, and rub their eyes. Each talking head gives a short statement in response to a previous question – not revealed in the video – asked by Jankowski, their professor, as to what they had learnt in his class. The unscripted statements vary from poetic, to philosophical, to sober, to provocative. Through their responses, the students themselves become the source of knowledge, passing insights onto the viewers. After delivering their message, the students’ heads disappear under the water. Finally, Professor Jankowski reemerges from the Bodensee’s waters without saying a word.
Shot in one take only on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the Art Academy Stuttgart, the flexible element of water becomes a metaphor for the constantly regenerating and collective knowledge production.
